Finally, I have found some great face painters that love dressing up in costume. They are reliable and friendly and young (I feel like an old lady compared to these pretty girls!!! ☺ )

You would no believe how many children I get to meet a week. This week I have nine kids birthday parties to perform my magic shows at and also the Brisbane superhero characters are also out and about.
There are so many different categories of children. Here are just a few and how I work with them.
1. the cheeky monkeys:
These are my favourite types of children. It reminds me or my craziness and rebellion of not sticking to the norm – how many 30 year olds do you know dress up in a fairy and pirate costume and head off to dance madly at kids birthday party songs!!
I really enjoy this type as they are the type that if you give them and inch they will take a mile. They need to be told what is good and bad behaviour or they will run a-muck. But , they are sparky and funny and when handled with care and as much zest as they put out these children make birthday parties exciting and fun!
2. The shy ones
Ahhhh. What I love about shy children is the transition from clinging onto their mums leg as they enter a new building with lots of screaming children and slowly but surely end up, faces beaming, on their own, mum at the back, watching the show! I do feel sorry for the parents with shy children as they want to be able to just have some time on their own where their child feels happy alone. Most parents are very very good and come and sit down with their child to watch the birthday magic show together. Some parents need a little reminding that they are there for the children –and that we need to make the children enjoy themselves – but that’s what I’m there for hehe “ohhh I’m sure Jessica’s mummy would love to settle Jessica down by coming over and watching the show too”. It’s worth it to see the mum (20 mins later) back up with the parents and her child happily watching the show
3 the I LOVE YOU kids
Now this is adorable. You go into a house that you have never been to before. You hear a scream of delight. A little person comes running at you. “SuperSteph!” as if we were the best of friends that hadn’t seen eachother for ages. You get whisked away by the birthday child to see their bedroom, their cake, their parrot “greenie” ahhh.
There are more groups than these- however – it’s getting late - to be continued…
Ladies and Jellybeans, toys and smells SuperSteph is proud to present the most amazing entertainment agency, Brisbane Supeheroes!
For about two years I have been thinking about creating a children’s entertainment agency which I was to open up in Brisbane. I started thinking about this when I saw a lovely lady putting up a puppet stand. She worked at the same entertainments agency as I did and was about 65 years of age. I looked at the poor magic lady struggling up the steps with far too much equipment (definitely a reminder of myself) She looked tired out even before the show had started. I thought then that this magical birthday fairy will be putting up her feet with a nice glass of wine at that time in her life.
I do love performing at children’s birthday parties – but I would really like to stop around 45 years old and do more stage comedy magic – who wants to see my knobbly knees in a fairy outfit when they are getting on a bit.
So – welcome to Brisbane Superheroes –
This agency has started only recently. The website is not even up yet. However, from word of mouth the phone calls keep coming and we are now looking for more staff! As the staff will be setting the example of fantastic children’s parties around Brisbane I am only choosing from the best. They will arrive in complete costume and take on the character that they are pretending to be! They will play superhero, pirate or fairy games all the while staying in character.
We have already had great feedback on our fairies, pirates and superheroes. Clients have also noticed the quality of our costumes.
I can see a bright future for Brisbane Superheroes and a future of me sitting on that veranda at 65 with glass of wine in hand and a happy smile on my face ☺

Time and time again do I get asked if I do face painting. I do face paint but not at children’s birthday parties, rather at small groups of children at wedding functions and suchlike and, although I can know up a few basic faces (like dog, monster, butterfly) I am no where NEAR as good as some kids face painters.
One particular face painting company I like is Wowee Creations. We worked on a party together and actually never met (both very busy working at opposite ends of the event). However this company was different. Instead of just do the basic tiger and rabbit that I see so often Wowee were actually making the whole of the children’s head into one big creation! All the children at the birthday party were wondering around with amazing faces and even better heir. The hair creations had different colour sparkly bits and pipe cleaner things and sprayed with amazing coloured hair spray.
I didn’t know who they were for ages until I heard from another entertainer that they had seen a lady magician also perform at a kid’s birthday party.
I also liked them as you get some face painters a child’s birthday party screaming at the top of their voice “Who wants their face painted neeexxxxt” right at the pinnacle of an amazing trick – making everyone look and the magician lose the will to live!! ☺ They had a great way of putting the children in an order so they didn’t have to stand around waiting in a line – Great!
If you are going to get a face painter I highly recommend this company – They also do tattoos – for pirate parties!
Wowee Creations – Book them too!
I had a lady call me up yesterday asking for my information and prices etc. It was for a children’s birthday party in Brisbane in July. It was her daughter’s first party at home – she was going to be 4 years old. The lady needed help in finding the best birthday party for her daughter. Naturally I told her that my show would be perfect for her daughter’s party – because It’s true. However, she wanted more information than that. For example, where she could by a my little pony birthday cake and how much bouncy castles were and did I know of any good face painters in Brisbane. I knew of some great face AND hair painters (where they spray your hair different colours and put feathers in it etc) However I didn’t know about the price for bouncy castles.
Bouncy castles are great!! Kids love Them!! The problem is what do the children do after 30 mins – 45 mins of bouncing on a bouncy castle? If you don’t have an entertainer you will have to be that entertainer – as well as take the photos – as well as make tea for the adults – as well as play pas the parcel – as well as show everyone where the toilet is – as well as find the plasters for the little boy who has cut his knee on the path…
I think you can see where I am going…
Bouncy castles are brilliant – as well as face painters – however they are not enough…They cannot entertain large groups of children (10+ kids) at a children’s birthday party. Unless you have a big family of adults ready to roll up their sleeves and entertain the children then it is going to be one stressful day.
The poor face painter has enough to do making the children at the party sit still for 10 minutes while paint is being applied.
Also there is parent etiquette:
Say there is a little boy/girl running around like mad – hitting children or not doing what they are told – are you going to feel comfortable enough to go up to that child and tell them to behave when their own mother/father is standing right there?- Doing squat about their own child’s behaviour? – you should and don’t feel guilty about it either! Children need to be told or it will escalate.
I am lucky – As an entertainer it is my responsibility to make sure the children are behaving - I don't mind the parents disagreeing with their child being corrected - That is my job!
I mainly do this through entertaining them – If they are entertained they don’t go around misbehaving- simple….BUT sometimes you get a child who obviously has had a few issues and just simply will not behave. I am no worries about correcting the children. I have to as a school teacher – you do it quickly and firmly and then leave it and smile at them when they are being good.
If you are doing the party games yourself (as my parents do when they choose the silver show) you need to make sure that you are comfortable with you correcting the children if they are misbehaving.
Some tips:
Bend down to them
Say quietly and in a low voice whilst looking at them in the eye– “don’t do that please. You will ruin the…. (or whatever they are doing)
Say “ Do you understand”
Make sure they look at you and say or nod yes
Stand up and go straight back into happy mummy/ daddy!!
I personally would appreciate someone else having that responsibility and not having any awkward feelings toward the parent …who must be OBLIVIOUS to the fact that their child is running riot around the house!! ☺
If anyone has seen the film Drop Dead Fred you will know what I am talking about. Drop Dead Fred is a children’s invisible friend who is very naughty. There is a scene where he meets all the other invisible friends in the area: Velcro head, Namby Pamby, Smelly Joe etc (I really should get out more) -
This film reminds me of being friends with the other children’s birthday party entertainers in and around Brisbane and the Gold Coast. I regularly meet up to discuss magic ideas and tricks of the trade, as well as marketing with the best children’s magicians in the area. Magic Glen, Johnny The Jester and Julian Mathers – with his red bag! It is great to the only lady birthday party magician in our Brisbane magic club. Everyone is very helpful and these particular magicians mentioned are also very good. I have seen their shows (Not gotten round to Julian’s magic show yet – but seen his equipment and style of performing) They are all very professional and have a lot of work on. I give them work that I just can’t do (I physically can’t do so many) and in turn they give me any gigs that they are booked for and I am not that day.
It is a great atmosphere amongst the real professional magicians and children’s birthday party entertainers – There is no jostling for the top- Because we are all great at entertaining children for birthday parties we end up having so much work that we don’t need to! - It’s great to have friends!
I have just got back from performing a superb pirate magic show that I performed for the children who are at (or just visiting) The Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. The place I perform is called “ The wonder Factory “ and is run by a lovely man called Nick. The room is full of video games and soft play equipment and colouring and painting for the children to forget their troubles (or troubles of maybe their brothers and sisters) and just be KIDS!
I saw a very cute boy in a spiderman costume today. He had his whole hand bandaged up with a needle and tube sticking out – ohhh it looked painful. But as kids are, he was proud of it and delighted in showing me. You should have seen his face when I said” Oh you have one of those squeaky bandages” and lightly pressed his hand and made it “magically” squeak. So SWEET! – We played party games today. One was the Superman song where you have to clap. James* wasn’t clapping (of course – one hand was bandaged up!) But he had great delight in slapping my hand as hard as he could when I offered him my spare hand (Ouch – sometimes they really hurt!! ☺ )
At the kids pirate magic show there was one of my old favourites – Katy*. “SUPERRRSTEPHHH” She came bounding up to me – I swear they grow 50cm every time I see them. “Hey SuperSteph – We are going to be called the magic sisters!” I looked down at her – thinking – I’m 30 this year – I could be your mum! – and loved it! PHEW maybe I don’t look too bad for 30 if a nine year old is calling me her sister!! ☺
There were a lot of older children about 8+. They don’t want to see a colour changing book or puppets– I gave them what they wanted – close up card tricks –
“Oh I know this magic trick….” Said Timothy* aged 9
“Oh you do, do you?” I smiled- and carried on.
His face was pure shock as I found his chosen card miraculously folded up in my mouth.
“How did you do that?”
“Magic Tim – pure magic!!!” hehe
I’m really looking forward to working there again – lovely people, lovely kids - and they filmed the pirate magic show for all the children in the Brisbane hospital who can’t come to see it physically to see it in their beds! I hope they got my best side...
*Not the real name’s of the children
I am so lucky to see (and eat) so many different birthday cakes for kids birthday parties. Recently I say a fairy cake, covered in fairy floss, for a girls magic fairy party. It looked (and tasted) amazing! I also saw a pirate cake recently too, in the shape of a treasure box. Inside the treasure box cake , spilling over the top were chocolate coins and jelly snakes and squishy jelly eyes – looked fabulous!
What is sometimes nice is to have the birthday cake on show –after all that effort of making one – people rarely see it in the whole form and en up getting a glimpse at it while the candles are blown out and that’s it! I have sometimes been to children’s birthday parties where the cake is on a stand – looks great! But you have to be careful as some children just can’t keep their hands off! ☺
One party I recently went to the cake was in the shape of a football. It was covered in white hard chocolate and the boy, who was very shy (ahh) smashed the birthday cake with a small mallet which had been covered with silver foil.
As I am a fairy magician for fairy birthday parties I always get invited to princess parties too! One time, about a year ago, I performed my magic show at a girls princess party and on her cake was a tiara. When the birthday girl blew out the candles she then took out the tiara (that was reasting on hard-ish icing) and wore it! AHHHH so cute!
I also saw a beautiful butterfly birthday cake made from smarties – The home made ones certainly look the best. Being English, the ice cream cakes are also very new to me – We never see those in England. Fairy bread and cheerios don’t exist in England either. It is fascinating how different cultures have different food for children’s birthday parties. One of my favourites is in South Africa oranges are cut in half – the orange scooped out and made into juice – then the orange peel acts like a bowl , in which you put jelly. Once chilled the orange is then cut and you have jelly segments – wonderful! If anyone wants instructions for these please give me an email and I will send them to you along with some pictures of my attempt (yes I am sad – went home and made my family some jelly segments)
The sparklers for children’s birthday cakes never seem to be long enough for the photos – maybe there is a place to get extra long sparklers – they certainly do make the cake look magical. If anyone knows of any please let me know.
SuperSteph has just come up with a brand new routine for her bunny show that is specifically for birthday parties with children aged 2-5 years old.
It was so easy coming up with a routine that will make the children laugh at a party. After closing all the curtains so the neighbours couldn't see (they may think she was mad talking to a puppet) SuperSteph got to work with making Lettuce do as many crazy things as she could:
giving a birthday present to the birhday child, dancing, clapping, hitting SuperSteph with a modelling balloon, making a balloon disappear, being combed my the children at the party and LOADS more!
SuperSteph performed it for a child's birthday party this morning - There were 19 kids at a sweet little girls first birthday - aged between 1-3 years old. It's tough to entertain children at this age - However, the bunny magic show went down so well - everyone stayed glued to the performance waiting to see what would happen next!
SuperSteph will work on refining this particular part of the bunny show tonight - quick! someone shut those curtains before she gets carted off to the mad house!!
